Michael Garvey, son of Hugh and Anne (nee Markey) Garvey, was born Apr. 10, 1877, in Drumgurra, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. Emigration/Immigration
Michael Garvey, decided to leave Ireland and move to the U.S.A. I have obtained a copy of both Michael's Passenger List Index Card, and a copy of Michael's Passenger List. Michael's passenger info shows he traveled to the U.S. port of Philadelphia, PA. He sailed on the ship S.S. Indiana. The S.S. Indiana set sail from the port of Liverpool, England, on April 17, 1895, arriving at Philadelphia May 1, 1895. U.S. Citizenship
Michael Garvey had taken his first step towards American citizenship before June of 1900, the month of the 1900 U.S. Federal census. Column 18 of the 1900 U.S Federal census entry for Michael has the value 'PA'. A value of 'PA' indicates the person was foreign born and had filed a Declaration Of Intent, also know as the person's 'first papers', to become an American citizen.
Michael followed up on his U.S. citizenship process when, on September 22, 1904, Michael filed his Petition For Naturalization with the Court of Common Pleas of the County of Canden, New Jersey. To view a copy of Michael's Petition For Naturalization, click here.
