John McCabe and Various Elizabeths
Late 1700s early 1800s
Townland of Cookspark
Mosstown Parish
Co. Louth, Ire.

McCabe Intro
My individual McCabe line is currently traced back to my great, great, great grandfather John McCabe, who lived in the townland of Cookspark, in Mosstown parish, of
Co. Louth, Ireland, as far back as the late 1700s. It is not clear exactly who John's wife was. I have obtained 8 baptism records for children of a John McCabe, all with an address of Cookspark. All 8 of those records lists the mother's first name as some form of the name Elizabeth. Of the 8 records, 5 show the mother's first name as Betty, 2 show the mother's first name as Elizabeth and 1 shows the mother's first name as Eliza. I don't have a problem believing all 8 of those records are for the same mother, even though the mother's first name varies. The mother's last name is where some concern sets in. There is one record each for a Betty Mullen, an Eliza Mullen and an Elizabeth Mullen. There are two records for a Betty Milen. There is one record for a Betty Miles and one for a Betty Myles. Then, there is one for an Elizabeth Murry. I don't have an explanation for why there are so many mother's last names. I don't believe there were 3 or 4 different John McCabes, married to different women, all of whom had a first name being some form of the name Elizabeth, living in Cookspark, all at the same time. I am going to proceed as though there was just one couple. I will continue working on trying to determine if there were multiple John McCabes, all having a wife whose first name happened to be either Betty, Elizabeth or Eliza, during that late 1700s - early 1800s time period.

Offspring
I have obtained eight baptism records related to John McCabe of Cookspark, from the late 1700s, through the early 1800s. I obtained all eight records from the rootsireland database. The mother's first name, as I have stated before, is a form of the name Elizabeth, on all eight records. But, there are various values listed for the mother's last name. I have listed the names of all eight children in the table below. To browse any of the additional info I have obtained and posted to the internet for any of the children of John McCabe and various Elizabeths of Cookspark, click on the links in the table.

McCabe Tithe Applotment Records
I have found additional references to ggg grandfather John McCabe, in Mosstown parish, in the Tithe Applotment Books, of 1823 - 1837. There is an entry for John McCabe in both the townland of Cookspark, and the townland of Puckstown. Both Cookspark and Puckstown are townlands in Mosstown parish. There is a notation towards the bottom right corner of the Cookspark record that is dated Oct. 25, 1834. Apparently, the 1834 date applies to all of Mosstown parish. So, even though John McCabe and the various Elizabeth's last child was baptized in the year 1816, it would seem John was still living in Mosstown parish during the year 1834. To view a copy of the Cookspark record, click on this Cookspark 1834 Tithe Applotment link. John McCabe's entry is line number 195. You will probably need to click on the '+' sign several times to make the writting large enough to read. To view a copy of the Puckstown record, click on this Puckstown 1834 Tithe Applotment link. John McCabe's entry is line number 168. You will probably need to click on the '+' sign several times to make the writting large enough to read.

McCabe Death Info
I have found a death register record for a John McCabe, who was living in the townland of Cookspark, at the time of his death. The death register record is dated April 5, 1852. I know of two persons named John McCabe, associated with the townland of Cookspark, at that time. One of those was my great, great, great grandfather John McCabe. The other was ggg grandfather John McCabe's son, John McCabe. I know John McCabe the son continued living well beyond 1852. My conclusion, the 1852 John McCabe death register record is most likely the death register record of my ggg grandfather John.
