Marriage license number 280151 was issued in the city of Philadelphia, PA, to Isabelle E. McCaffrey, on May 22, 1912. Marriage license number 280151 stated the intentions of Isabelle E. McCaffrey and Patrick J. O'Keefe to be married. Well, marriage license application number 280151 stated the apparent intentions of Isabelle E. McCaffrey to be married. Isabelle is certainly the person who appeared at the courthouse and filled out and signed the marriage license application.
Attached to the microfilmed copy of marriage license application number 280151 was a statement indicating that the certificate from the marriage officiating authority was not available when the microfilm copy of the marriage license application was created. Perhaps the certificate was lost over time or, was filed incorrectly or, was unavailable due to some other human error. It would also be unavailable if the marriage never took place. Obviously, the license application was filed. If the marriage did not take place, the actual certificate would not have been filled out and would not have been filed. If the marriage did not take place and the certificate was never filled out and filed, it certainly would not have been available when the license application was microfilmed.
I had several discussions with my aunt Gertrude, a person who actually knew Patrick O'Keefe. She did not remember him being married. Granted, aunt Gertrude wasn't born until 1922. A marriage between Patrick and Isabelle could have been over by then. Aunt Gertrude doesn't remember meeting or hearing of an Isabelle O'Keefe either.
One other note regarding Patrick and Isabelle, I'm sure they knew each other. In fact, they apparently lived together at one point. There is an Isabelle O'Keefe list in the 1910 census. She is listed as the wife of a Patrick O'Keefe. I would speculate that they were not married, even though the census states otherwise. After all, if they were married by 1910, why would she be filling out a marriage license application in 1912? Whether they ever did actually get married may be one of the family mysteries that remains forever unsolved.
