Clara Marie McCabe
Daughter of Dr. Nicholas and
Mary (nee O'Connor) McCabe

Clara Marie McCabe, daughter of Dr. Nicholas F. and Mary (nee O'Connor) McCabe, was born in Nebraska, in July of 1895, according to the 1900 US census. The 1900 US census for North Platte, NE has her name listed as Clara M. The 1910 US census for North Platte, NE has it listed as Clara Mary. Both the 1920 and 1930 census records have her name different, too. The 1920 census, taken when she was teaching at St. Mary's, has her name listed as Mary McCabe. The 1930 US census, taken when she was teaching in Salt Lake City, has her listed as Marie McCabe. The Nicholas McCabe biography has her name as Marie, as does the St. Mary's College archives. As she apparently tended to use Marie, I will use that name going forward, when not using her CSC name. Marie probably spent most of her younger years in North Platte, NE. Marie then attended Saint Mary's College, in South Bend, Indiana. Marie graduated from St. Mary's in 1917. Marie then went on to become a CSC (Sisters of the Holy Cross) nun, taking the name Sister M. Clare Assisi. Sister M. Clare Assisi taught at St. Mary's for several years. She then filled various assignments in Utah, Idaho, and Califonia. Sister M. Clare Assisi died, in California, on Monday, May 26, 1986.

Marie played tennis while attending St. Mary's College. Marie won a trophy in 1914 in the doubles compitition. Mr. John Kovach of the Saint Mary's College Archives was nice enough to send along a copy of a picture of Marie with the trophy.

Sister M. Clare Assisi died at the covent on Monday, May 26, 1986 in Ventura, California. She was buried in Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard, California on Thursday, May 29, 1986. I have obtained a copy of Sister M. Clare Assisi's death record. To view an on line copy click here. I have also obtained a copy of an article from The Ventura Free Press newspaper that told of Sister M. Clare Assisi's death. To read the article click here.

I had set up a page at Find A Grave for Sister M. Clare Assisi. Then, a person, identified as S. Franklin, was kind enough to respond to my request to take a picture of Sister's grave site and add it to her Find A Grave memorial. To view Sister's Find A Grave memorial, click here.
