Intro
Two of my great, great grandparents were Dennis Murphy and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy. These names were obtained from the death certificate of my great grandmother Margaret (nee Murphy) O'Keefe. After learning the names of my Murphy great, great grandparents, I searched for where in Ireland they were from.

I know, through oral family history, my great, great grandparents Dennis Murphy and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy were from somewhere in Co. Cork. I now think they may have been from the eastern part of Co. Cork. Working with my sister-in-law Jan, I have obtained several baptism records for children of a couple named Denis and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy. Four of the Denis and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy's children's baptism records I have obtained indicate an address of Ballydeague, in the parish/district of Castletownroche. Two of the Denis and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy's children's baptism records I have obtained indicate an address of Ballyhooly, in the parish/district of Castletownroche.

I have included links to several maps to help readers understand where the listed townlands were/are located. The first map is a map showing all of the counties of Ireland. County Cork is located towards the bottom right of the map. The second map, from the Brian Mitchell book, A New Genealogical Atlas Of Ireland, shows the civil parishes of the eastern part of Co. Cork. I have outlined the Catholic parish of Castletownroche. I have highlighted the civil parish of Ballyhooly, that area labeled 12, which is located within the Catholic parish of Castletownroche. I have also highlighted the civil parish Kilcummer, that area labeled 60, which is located within the Catholic parish of Castletownroche.

The civil parish of Ballyhooly is highlighted because the townland of Ballyhooly is located in the civil parish of Ballyhooly, and is listed as the address on two of the Denis and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy children's baptiam records I have obtained. The civil parish of Kilcummer is highlighted because the townland of Ballydeague is located in the civil parish of Kilcummer, and is listed as the address on four of the Denis and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy children's baptiam records I have obtained.

Offspring

1870
The 1870 census in Philadelphia was originally done during the summer of 1870. There was a second U.S. Federal census taken, in at least parts of Philadelphia, later that same year. Dennis and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy, and family, were included in both of the 1870 Philadelphia, PA censuses. There are some differences in ages between the two Murphy family census records from 1870, however, the basic family information is the same. Both of the 1870 census records show that these Murphys lived in Philadelphia's sixth ward. The second 1870 census provides an additional detail by noting, on the top of the form, that the form is for North Front street.

Both of the 1870 Philadelphia census records show Dennis and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy having ten children, though they likely had eleven. I have included 11 children in the table above. The table combines information from the Castletownroche Catholic parish church baptism records, the Irish Civil Registration birth record for Margaret Murphy, daughter of Denis and Mary (nee Veale) Murphy of Ballyhooly, Co. Cork, Ireland and the 1870 Philadelphia U.S. census records.

1880
Dennis and Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy and their family also appear in the 1880 US census for Philadelphia, PA. The 1880 census shows, though barely visible, an exact street address for these Murphys. The exact street address was 225 N. Front street.

Murphy Death Records
Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy, wife of Dennis Murphy, died December 23, 1886, in Philadelphia, PA. I have obtained a copy of Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy's death register record. Mary's death is recorded on page 2 of the 1887 Death Register for the City of Philadelphia, PA. The copy I have obtained is not very legible at all. The microfilm copy that I obtained my copy from was barely legible enough to confirm that it was the Mary Murphy of 225 N. Front Street whose death was recorded. Notification of Mary Murphy's death appeared in both The North American newspaper and The Philadelphia Press newspaper, on Christmas Day, Saturday, December 25, 1886. Both of Mary Murphy's death notices contain the 225 N. Front St. address. Mary (nee Vale/Veal/Veale) Murphy was buried in New Cathderal Cemetery, on December 27, 1886.

Dennis Murphy, widower of Mary Murphy, died Monday, January 16, 1888, not quite 13 months after the death of his wife Mary. A copy of Dennis Murphy's death record has not yet been obtained. Notification of Dennis Murphy's death appeared in both The North American newspaper and The Philadelphia Press, on Thursday, January 19, 1888. I have obtained a copy of the Dennis Murphy death notice from both newspapers. To view a copy of each of the Dennis Murphy newspaper death notices I have obtained, click here. Both of Dennis Murphy's death notices contain the 225 N. Front Street address. Great great grandfather Dennis Murphy's death is the last known family connection to the house at 225 N. Front street. Dennis was buried, with his wife, in New Cathedral Cemetery, on January 20, 1888.
