U.S. Federal Census Records
The first U.S. Federal Census my Keefe/O'Keefes appear in is the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA. You may access my Keefe/O'Keefe and related families U.S. Federal Census Selector Page by clicking here.
I looked the Keefe/O'Keefe name up in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census records for Philadelphia, PA, after obtaining the names of my great, great grandparents. I concentrated on the area of north Philly just above Market St. and just west of the Delaware River. The reason, the address indicated on my great grandfather David Keefe/O'Keefe's birth record. That record shows that David was born at number 3 Callowhill, an address in the area just described.
The 1860 U.S. Federal Census records show a number of Keefe/O'Keefes living in Philadelphia's eleventh ward. It also proves my great, great grandfather John was not the only John Keefe/O'Keefe living in that area. There is a couple listed as John and Julie Keefe just a few doors down from my John and Margaret Keefe. The 1860 U.S. Federal Census records also shows a Patrick Keefe and family living in the 6th ward. Using information from the 1859 - 1861 city directories helps to locate specific addresses for the 1860 U.S. Federal Census.
Philadelphia City Directories
Another useful source of information has been the various City Directories for the city of Philadelphia, PA. I have made copies of numerous pages of Philadelphia City Directories. I have included a number of those city directory pages here on my web site. You can access my Keefe/O'Keefe Philadelphia City Directories Selector Page by clicking here.
I have also included a copy of a portion of a Philadelphia, PA street map from a Philadelphia city directory for the year 1886. This helps in keeping one oriented in terms of street addresses. The area of Philadelphia where my Keefes/O'Keefes initially lived is north of Market St. and east of Broad St. In fact, for the first 20 years or so, they never lived more than a couple of blocks from the Delaware River. One Philadelphia address that appears repeatedly in connection with my O'Keefe family is 419 N. Front Street. The first reference to the 419 N. Front Street address that I have is for a David Keefe listed at that address in the 1859 Philadelphia city directory. Note that there are also two Michael Keefes listed in the 1859 Philadelphia city directory living at #5 Callowhill. That Callowhill address is just a block or so from the 419 N. Front Street address.
